Combinatorics

Combinatorics is a branch of mathematics that deals with combinations, permutations. etc. To get more on this subject and to understand the combinatorial system, Google it and go Wikipedia - the free encyclopedia, here you would find the overview, history and the rules etc.
You don't have to know mathematics to understand the principles as they are applied to hairdressing.

You can be whatever you want to be

Before I get into the hairdressing part of this article, I would like to tell you a little about myself.

I started out my working life as an electrician working in an oil refinery, and continued in the construction of three nuclear power stations, three conventional power stations, a colliery, a granary and in many large construction sites. I hated it after the first couple of years but I continued because that was what I was trained for.

I was working for the railway when I made up my mind that this was not for me and decided that I should change my occupation. I am so glad that I had the courage to do what it took to become a hairdresser. It was only then that I understood what it meant by "enjoying your work".

(By the way, as a hair stylist, I was earning twice as much as an electrician, working easier and with less effort).

I was a hairdresser for only two months when I was hired by a large chain store as a stylist. This was an upper scale salon. There were two levels the stylists were paid more.

One day this famous (at the time) country singer came in with long hair and started to give me instructions as to how she wanted it styled. I didn't have a clue how to do it and I had to humble myself (and take the humiliation that went with it) by asking another hairdresser to show me how.

I decided then that I should buy a mannequin and start practicing. It is surprising what one can do from practice, which I still do.

How do you feel when someone brings a picture and says "I want this, and how do you think I would look in it"? She has all of ten hairs on her head but she wants to look like Farrah Fawcett, or comes in with hair down past her waist and asks to have it all up on her head?

If someone comes into your salon and asks for a specific style are you able to say to them "You've come to the right place"? If not, you are advertising that you can't supply all their needs and they will go to another place where they can get all their needs met. Even your loyal clients will leave you if they visit another salon where they can get all their needs met.

What you have to know about your short-comings

If you are prepared to keep an open mind and be completely honest with yourself, honest enough to accept that perhaps the knowledge and skills that you have isn't as good as it should be, or even humble enough to admit that you are not up to scratch if it isn't, what's the point of burying your head in the sand? Even if you are comfortable where you are, you will still benefit from taking my seminar.

What will it achieve by hoping things will improve? That won't solve your problem. And wishing for a formula won't make you any money. In fact nothing will unless you take positive action. No use waiting to win the lottery, or for your ship to come in if you didn't send one out.

What most people want is to live better and hopefully improve their lives in some way. Information which will improve your skills and confidence is relevant.

What to Expect

In Winnipeg where I live and work, the price of an upstyle can run from thirty-five dollars to more than a hundred dollars. The average being about sixty-five dollars.

You can do an average of about four in an hour. Just doing eight per day, you can earn five hundred and fifty dollars. Two thousand seven hundred and fifty dollars a week, eleven thousand dollars a month, one hundred and thirty two thousand dollars a year. That is for working about four hours taking your time. Your potential to make a good living is a possibility. How does that sound?

The four styles in my video took forty- seven minutes to do all four starting from scratch and doing it slowly to demonstrate what I am doing.

Well, that is your average potential and more, it is up to you.

You get out what you put into it.

I can't promise you that you will get rich, but I can promise you that you will get busier. When you get busier you will be able to charge more for your services as you would create a buzz, an excitement in your salon.

I know all of you might not hit the "big time" but I can assure you that you would get "bigger".

You think you know how much you are worth, you are worth much more, and you would be surprised what people think you are worth. I can assure you, most think you are worth much more than you think you are. It is all in your attitude. If you go around thinking you are not worth much, or you are thinking you are worth a lot. You are right.

You have heard it before, clients complaining about how they can't get anyone to do their hair how they want it when they need it on that special day, be it their wedding, prom, going to have that special interview, meeting that special guy, when going out with the girls or just going out and wants to feel good.

Brides and prom clients are frustrated because their needs are not being met. They are leaving the salons un-satisfied. Partly to blame for this frustration is the stylist who fails to specialize in this niche market.

Be the one they come to

A while ago, this salesman client of mine came in and was relating how he has a funny shape and how he can never get a suit off the rack to fit him. He had this tailor that used to make his suit for him, but now he is retired.

He said not that he is special or that particular, but he just likes his suit to fit well. He feels so confident and it is one thing less that he has to worry about.

He is starting to panic at the prospect of ever finding another tailor and the number of wasted hours of frustrations going from store to store, undressing and dressing and undressing and dressing, trying on different suits. When it fits, it is not the right color, when it is the right color, it doesn't fit.

Now, this guy says he likes his suit to fit well. He doesn't mind paying a premium price for comfort and he doesn't mind paying extra for the "peace of mind" knowing he can depend on his tailor every time for satisfaction.

This is where you come in. Your clients know that that is your niche, they know they can depend on you, they know that when they leave your salon they will not only be satisfied, but they will be on "cloud nine". And they would pay a premium price for that.

You can charge as much as you want and they would not mind paying, also, the more you charge, the more you are worth to them. Nobody likes cheap things no matter how good it is and they value it more the more they pay for it.

Now I want to tell you about my seminars.

I have been a hairdresser since 1979, and I have been going to seminars including the largest hair show which is held every year in Winnipeg. On the platform at these hair shows there are some of the top national and international teachers. Most of the platform artists show you how to do a specific style. I'll show you how to style hair! There is the difference.

In my seminar I will explain the principles of Combinatorics - a branch of Mathematics and how to apply it to hairdressing. Once you understand that the possibilities are limitless as to what you can do.

In hairdressing most things are formulaic. It all has to do with Mathematics, be it combinatorics or geometry. There are certain rules of thumb you must know and there are only three ways you can cut hair - blunt, layered and the combination of the two.

In layering (graduating) hair there are many ways to do this. You can do graduation by elevation, graduation by over direction, graduation by tension, flat graduation and rounded graduation. There are many ways you can do these graduation techniques to get different results.

I would show you how to use these to do any style by observation or to create you own styles. I would show you why it is sometimes better to cut horizontally, and the advantages of cutting vertically and diagonally.

It is all in understanding how to use the formulae, your talent, creativity and imagination to personalize and expand them to make them your own. Anybody can do it! You will never be worried or fearful of anything in hairdressing as far as cutting and styling hair goes. And this is where the money and fun is.

I quite understand that I can't get to every body who may want to take or are interested in getting more information about my seminars.
